The BJP has lost an old friend in the Naga People's Front (NPF) by striking an alliance with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland, thus putting its government in neighbouring Manipur at risk.

The BJP-led alliance in Manipur has support from four NPF MLAs.

Congress had won 28 out of 60 seats in the 2017 Manipur polls, while the BJP had secured 21 seats. The party had not even opened its account in the state in the past decade. The BJP, however, got backing from 11 other MLAs, including 4 from NPF.

NPF president Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu said that his party is still a part of the alliance. "Our four MLAs are still supporting BJP. But we will think about it later," he said while speaking to DNA after an election rally Viswema village near Kohima.

The NDPP-BJP alliance has left the octogenarian leader Liezietsu upset who said that his relationship with the BJP goes back to the Janata Party days in 1977.

"We maintained a strong relationship with their leaders. In 2003 we played a key role bringing together non-Congress partners in Nagaland," he said. "We have always protected them," he added.

The former chief minister of Nagaland said that the BJP wanted to strike an alliance with NPF but wanted the party to concede 15 seats. He said that this was not possible as NPF had already declared candidates for all 60 seats.

Dr TM Lotha, BJP candidate from Wokha, said it is unfortunate that NPF has severed ties with his party. "After all, a state like Nagaland depends on Centre for everything, so it is unfortunate for them to have ended the relationship with BJP. This will harm them."
