Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh faced yet another embarrassment on Wednesday when a BJP MLA from Chief Minister's hometown Gorakhpur sat on a dharna against his own government in protest against mushrooming of liquor shops in the district against norms.

The BJP MLA from Gorakhpur, Dr Radha Ram Mohan Aggarwal, began a dharna at the city's Town Hall to protest against Yogi government's failure to check opening of liquor shops in the district against the laid down norms.

Significantly, the BJP MLA Dr Radha Ram Mohan Aggarwal, is considered close to CM Adityanath. Being his political mentor, Yogi made him win on a Hindu Mahasabha ticket from Gorakhpur constituency. Later, Yogi allowed him to contest on a BJP ticket.

Dr Aggarwal, a child specialist, came to news after his tiff with IPS officer Charu Nigam over alleged lathi-charge on women and children who were protesting against opening of liquor shop in Chiluataal area in Gorakhpur against government's norms. Charu had sustained minor injuries in a stone-pelting by the protesters when police tried to remove them to clear traffic.

Dr Aggarwal reportedly yelled at Nigam reducing her into tears when she tried to justify the use of minor force to lift the traffic jam. The misbehaviour by Aggarwal had turned into a major controversy when Nigam tweeted against the arrogance of the ruling party MLA. She received support from social media users and IPS Association.

The Central and UP IPS Associations had condemned the incident and demanded action against the erring MLA. They said if such incidents went unnoticed it will be detrimental to the police force.

Sitting at a day-long dharna, Dr Aggarwal alleged that liquor shops were popping up near schools, religious places and residential areas in gross violation of Supreme Court orders. "People of Gorakhpur have identified these shops, and when they protest for their closure, police use force on innocent pregnant women and children... I will submit a list of these illegal shops to the state government through the district administration. I will continue this protest till these shops are removed," Dr Aggarwal warned Yogi government.

The Congress, however, termed BJP MLA's dharna as a drama to save himself from facing action in the misbehaviour case. "If he is serious about illegal liquor shops why doesn't he hold dharna in Lucknow outside Vidhan Bhawan?" questioned Akhilesh Pratap Singh, the Congress Spokesperson.
