BJP likely to submit government formation plan to Jammu and Kashmir Governor

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to submit a formal proposal on government formation in Jammu and Kashmir to state governor NN Vohra on Thursday.

According to reports, the proposed meeting will take place a day after People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the largest party, met the Governor on Wednesday.

After the meeting, Mehbooba Mufti appeared to lean towards the BJP as she invoked former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's vision and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi "has a big responsibility" towards the state.

In the five-phased recent state assembly polls, the PDP won 28 seats in the 87-member Jammu and Kashmir assembly, the BJP won 25, while the National Conference and the Congress won 15 and 12 seats respectively. The majority mark was 44, which none of the four political parties achieved.

On Wednesday, Mehbooba said, "Media reports say we have the support of 55 MLAs but we don't want to form a government for the sake of it. A government should be one that is about welfare and peace, and for that we need Mr Vajpayee's approach."

The BJP's Ram Madhav said what the PDP leader said was "good" and added, "As and when something concrete happens, we will take it forward."

So far no party or combination of parties, has staked claim to form government.
