Prime Minister Narendra Modi's request to people to shun use of petrol or diesel once a week in his Mann Ki Baat on Sunday has been put into practice by some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators in Bihar.

On Tuesday, half a dozen BJP MLCs reached Bihar legislative council, where the budget session is currently underway, on an e-rickshaw. "On Sunday, PM Modi suggested this measure for building of a new India of our dreams, and we have only followed his idea," BJP MLC Sanjay Mayukh, one of the legislators who travelled on the environment friendly rickshaw, told DNA.

Mayukh was accompanied by his council colleagues Lal Babu Prasad, Rajan Kumar Singh, Suraj Nandan Kushwaha, Aditya Narayan Pandey and Rajesh Kumar alias Bablu Gupta on the e-rickshaw. They commenced their journey from BJP state headquarters, a couple of kilometres from Bihar legislature, and again took the e-rickshaw while returning from the legislative council.

"It was a symbolic gesture so that more and more people become aware about PM's suggestion and pledge not to use petrol or diesel once a week," Mayukh added.

Earlier on Monday, BJP MLA from Chatapur, Neeraj Kumar Bablu, had paddled a cycle to Bihar legislative assembly. "On PM's request, I have pledged that I will travel on cycle at least once a week instead of using any petrol or diesel powered vehicle," Bablu told reporters.

He also requested Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Bihar legislative assembly speaker Vijay Choudhary to tell ministers, legislators and officials to cycle to their workplaces once a week. "A number of countries have dedicated cycle tracks that are used by commuters. I would request the CM to construct a cycle track in Patna too, and if it is done, I will come to Vidhan Sabha on a cycle everyday," he added.
