Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditya Nath got a major blow on the law and order front on when a senior BJP leader Raja Valmiki was shot dead in the communally sensitive Muzaffarnagar on Wednesday.

A former member of the BJP State Executive Committee and ex-General Secretary, Raja Valmiki was sitting at his daily shop in Holi Bazar, Khatualiin, Muzaffarnagar when three unidentified assailants on a bike shot him in broad daylight. The BJP leader died on the spot.

Agitated supporters of the slain BJP leader jammed the highway and resorted to stone-pelting and arson, damaging several shops and vehicles. The angry mob also misbehaved and assaulted Khatauli Nagar Palika Chairman Paras Jain, who is also from BJP, when he rushed to the spot. Later, he was escorted by the police to a safe place.

Family members of Raja Valmiki alleged that he was murdered at the behest of Khatauli Nagar Palika Chairman Paras Jain. The slain BJP leader’s father had given a testimony in a criminal case against Jain and since then the Chairman had enmity with the Valmiki family. The family members have lodged a complaint with the police naming Jain and four others.

The District Magistrate DK Singh too is camping in the area to check on any fallout from the murder. “We have got clues about the assailants and within 24 hours the police would work out the case,” he assured visiting BJP leaders and the DGP Javeed Ahmed.

There has also no check on rape cases despite the Chief Minister claiming that his government has tightened the grip over law and order.

Yogi Adityanath had directed the DGP Javeed Ahmed to work out the case within 24 hours and warned him against laxity on the law and order front. Recently, Adityanath had issued special instructions to the state police to keep crime under control in the state.
