BJP district president from North Dinajpur, Shankar Chakraborty was arrested hours after his provocative speech in Darivit area on Sunday where two students had been shot dead during a clash between students and police at Darivit High School in Islampur area of the district on September 20.

"If policemen come here, attack their vehicles, tie them to trees and beat them up. If they ask for water, rather feed the dogs. If they are injured, rather take an injured dog to the hospital," he said at a public meeting on Sunday. He also said that police were harassing people and disturbing women of the village.

"They should attack policemen with knives and other sharp objects which they work with," he had told villagers.

After the clashes on Thursday last week, Rajesh Sarkar was brought declared dead at the hospital on September 20 and another Tapan Burman, who was admitted to the hospital with injuries, died on September 21.

Early on Sunday, local TMC MLAs Kanailal Agarwal and Ghulam Rabbani had to face people's ire when they went to the area. People protested against their arrival and as they went to Tapan's place, his mother fainted, which fanned the anger of the crowd. "Why has the MLA come here four days after the death? He is our minister, our guardian. Couldn't he have come earlier?" asked a resident of the area.

Under pressure, Agarwal too, assured a probe. "Lives have been lost here and people are naturally angry. Police are saying they did not fire gunshots. Then who did? An investigation would be done and whoever is responsible will be booked. The investigation should be done by an independent agency. People here don't seem to trust the police," he said.

Nilkamal Sarkar, Rajesh's father said, "We don't have any faith on police. We want a CBI inquiry."

In the afternoon on Sunday, a BJP delegation led by senior BJP leaders Mukul Roy and Locket Chatterjee visited the houses of the deceased. "Tapan was the sole bread earner of the family and a member of the ABVP. He had asked for a Bengali teacher and an Urdu teacher. In return, police shot him dead. Police, under the instruction of Mamata is disturbing villagers. It is a fascist government in Bengal," Locket said.

"It is such a shame that students are now dealt with bullets. Will the CM answer this?" he said.

The BJP has called for a bandh on September 26 while the ruling TMC has opposed it. "Does Mamata remember how many times she has called a strike? Will she decide now when a bandh should be called?" Roy said.

State education minister Partha Chatterjee, who is leading the cabinet of ministers in the absence of Mamata, urged TMC workers to counter the bandh. "Once again the BJP is attempting to upset the law and order situation by calling for a bandh. There is no question of a bandh. We have asked all our workers to put up meetings and rallies from Monday and make people aware about the bandh. On September 26, all schools, colleges, transport and business units will be kept open. Our workers have been asked to foil the attempt to put up a strike in a peaceful manner," Chatterjee said.

While ADG (Law and Order) Anuj Sharma confirmed Chakraborty's arrest saying that any attempt to instigate people would be strictly dealt with.
