Almost two months after demonetization, the BJP's economic resolution adopted at the national executive on Saturday revolved around the issue, describing it as a sacred movement and a patriotic step and a decision that facilitated transfer of black money from the tax non-compliant to the poor.

Realising that demonetization was dominating public discourse just ahead of assembly elections in five states, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to cash in on the issue. The resolution said the move was aimed at an equitable society, fighting corruption and terror and benefiting the last man in the queue.

Meanwhile, government claimed it would lead to economic growth and increased revenue. "Achhe saashan chala kar revenue badh sakta hai (with good governance we can raise revenue)," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told the BJP national executive on Saturday, according to Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The resolution said demonetization was necessary for decimating the parallel economy of black money and for the smooth functioning of the GST in near future.

"There is today more money with the banks to lend. Interest rates have moved downwards. Black money has been deposited in the banks. It has lost its anonymity. The informal economy will now increasingly integrate with the formal economy. This will lead to higher revenues with the states and the Centre. It will lead to the bigger and the Cleaner GDP."

Sitharaman said Jaitley cited data that reports from "big" states like Maharashtra, UP and Haryana and said revenue generation had actually increased.

Addressing the media after the resolution was adopted, she said a decision like demonetization "could only be taken by a visionary leadership" and was accepted by the entire national executive as a historic one. The resolution described demonetization as an important step towards economic inclusion, transparent governance and equitable society.

"The Central Government has reaffirmed the belief that patriotism isn't just a political talk but it is the political will to take strong and decisive steps to favour the last man," it said.

Accusing the Opposition of "destructive energy", it said that in this "sacred movement" across the country, the common people were taking upon themselves the temporary suffering of standing in queues with "full enthusiasm and positive energy."

Sitharaman said the Prime Minister announced measures 50 days after demonetization because he recognised the hardships faced by poor, farmers, Dalits, tribals, women and senior citizens. She said it was explained at the meet why this demonetization was different and spelt out the objectives—fighting black money, removing counterfeit currency and blocking lifeline of terror groups. The resolution said "this step of the Central Government has reaffirmed the belief that patriotism isn't just a political talk but it is the political will to take strong and decisive steps to favour the last man."
