With just three months left to achieve its nine crore membership target, the BJP leadership is trying to crack the whip. In a bid to fix responsibility, the party has asked its office bearers and MPs to devote seven days each to the membership mission.

The BJP, which has registered around three crore members since its drive began on November 1, has to enrol around six crore more by March 31 to accomplish its goal. The party, according to sources, is confident that it would be able to enrol nine crore members, which would make it the largest political party in the world surpassing the record of the Chinese Communist Party with a membership of a little over 8.5 crore.

The campaign has been most successful in Uttar Pradesh where the party has enrolled nearly 85 lakh members. However, it has been slow in states where elections were held recently, including in Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand. In his recent trip to Mumbai, BJP president Amit Shah impressed upon the state unit the need for everyone to work on the membership campaign.

Shah is on a whirlwind tour of the country to personally monitor the progress of the campaign and keep the state units on their toes.

Both prime minister Narendra Modi and the party chief have enrolled 100 primary members each. The ministers may also do the same, sources said. All the national executive members, numbering nearly 200, have been asked to dedicate seven days for the drive.

"The membership campaign has galvanised the party as an effective tool for translating the electoral mandate into organisational strength," said BJP vice president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, who is in-charge of the membership drive.

The party leadership is trying to drive home the point that organisational strength was more enduring and would lay the foundation for future electoral victories. "This campaign will ensure a Congress-mukt Bharat (Congress-free India) and make BJP the largest democratic party," said BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma.

Hoping to get the support for Modi translated into membership, the BJP is trying to reach out to people through flagship schemes of the government. The party is focusing on states where elections are to be held in the next couple of years, including Bihar, West Bengal and Kerala.

Though the BJP has criteria and a screening mechanism for enrolling primary members, there is no such yardstick for its five-month membership drive.
