BJP national general secretary and West Bengal co-observer Kailash Vijayvargiya said on Thursday that during the bandh on Wednesday, TMC leaders had beaten up BJP workers, including women. They alleged that all of this happened in front of policemen.

"I ask the policemen who wear Mamata Banerjee's bangles, will they take any action against the TMC leaders who beat up and even kicked one of our female party workers?" Vijayvargiya said at a press conference on Thursday.

He congratulated party workers for the success of the bandh and apologised to the people of Bengal for the inconveniences caused. Referring to the death of two youth in Islampur, North Dinajpore district, he said: "Protesters and family members of the deceased have very rightly demanded a CBI probe into the killings. The state BJP has been and will be by their side till their demands are met," Vijayvargiya added.

Senior state BJP leader Mukul Roy, who was also present at the occasion, said that TMC supporters were returning from a meeting with state minister Suvendu Adhikary in Islampur, when they damaged shops that were shut due to bandh and also fired several rounds. "In retaliation to that businessmen there called another bandh on Thursday," Roy said.

On Thursday, at the BJP Bengal headquarters in Muralidhar Sen Lane off CR Avenue, All India Congress Committee member and Youth Congress general secretary Moumita Biswas Mishra defected to BJP. After receiving the party flag by Vijayvargiya, she said that her defection was owing to Congress leaders going soft on TMC.

"We have been subjected to tyrannical treatment by the TMC before and during the panchayat elections. Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating there was widespread violence in Bengal during the polls, the Central Congress leadership invited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to New Delhi for an alliance," Mishra said.
