BJP ends alliance with PDP in Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti resigns

The BJP has ended its shaky alliance with Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP, announced Ram Madhav, BJP General Secretary.

BJP president Amit Shah had called for an urgent meeting of Jammu and Kashmir BJP ministers and some top leaders in the national capital. Sources told DNA that the PDP was 'in shock' after hearing the annoucement.

CM Mehbooba Mufti has submitted her resignation to the Governor, DNA has learned. Meanwhile, it has also been learnt that Governor NN Vohra to continue till Amarnath Yatra. He is likely to be changed after that.

In a presser, Ram Madhav announced that it was no longer possible for the BJP to continue its alliance with PDP. 

Ram Madhav said: “After discussing with everyone, we’ve decided to call of the alliance. For the last three years, BJP has tried its best to work with the PDP to ensure that there was security and development in Jammu and Kashmir.”

He claimed that freedom of press was under threat citing the recent murder of Rising Kashmir editor Shujaat Bukhari.

Ram Madhav praised the Centre for trying its best to work with the state government. 

He added: “Centre did everything for the Valley. We've tried to put a full-stop to the ceasefire violations by Pak. PDP has not been successful in fulfilling its promises. Our leaders have been facing a lot of difficulties from PDP in developmental works in Jammu & Ladakh.”

Ram Madhav said: “Keeping in mind larger interest of India's security and integrity, fact is that J&K is an integral part of India, in order to bring control over the situation prevailing in the state we have decided that the reins of power in the state be handed over to the Governor.”

Reacting to the news, Omar Abdullah tweeted: "And so it has come to pass." He said: “The circumstances of running this government is not tenable and the fault lies with the other side.”

Speaking about the alliance, Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut, whose party also shares an uneasy relationship with BJP called the alliance ‘anti-national and unnatural’.

He said: “This alliance was anti-national & unnatural. Our party chief had said, this alliance won't work out. Had they continued with it they would have had to answer in 2019 Lok Sabha election.”

In the last three years, the PDP-BJP alliance ruined Jammu and Kashmir, said Congress’ Ghulam Nabi Azad.  

Meanwhile, Rafi Ahmad Mir, PDP spokesperson said: “We tried our best to run the govt with BJP. This had to happen. This is a surprise for us because we did not have any indication about their decision

Meanwhile, the National Conference General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar told DNA: “"Had Mehbooba accepted our offer of support, this bloodshed would not have been there. That offer was withdrawn soon after she joined hands with BJP.”
