Bengal BJP chief has batted for inclusion of Mukul Roy.
Whether to induct Mukul Roy, a heavyweight in Bengal politics is now a matter of huge dilemma for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On one hand, it may give a shot in the arm for party's organisation in Bengal where it is still in nascent state . The flipside though is with corruption allegations against Mukul Roy, the party may lose its sting while attacking the Mamata Banerjee government if it gets the senior leader in their fold.
Mukul Roy after resigning from Rajya Sabha was tight-lipped about his political futures, but it does look like he is inclined towards joining the saffron party. According to PTI report," Within one-two days a decision will be taken on this issue," a senior BJP leader privy to the developments told PTI. "Roy's induction into the party will help us in expanding the party base in the state. His organisational skill and knowledge of the ground level situation will be of great help," said another BJP leader.
However there are some who believe Mukul Roy's effectiveness as an able organiser is grossly overrated, and he is not even a shadow of himself without the guidance of Mamata Banerjee. They fear that the stench of corruption that Mukul will bring will also haunt them and blunt their attacks against the Mamata regime. It is to be remembered, that Mukul as the no 2 in the TMC hierarchy, frequently used to be targetted by central BJP leaders for being corrupt. Thus many believe Mukul Roy may become a political liability.
However state BJP President Dilip Ghosh has lauded Mukul Roy recently and acknowledged his role in bringing TMC to power in the state by ousting the Left. Mukul in the last few days have met several high profile BJP leaders including Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. He even hailed BJP for helping TMC to grow in the state in its early days. Looks like Mukul Roy is all set to join the saffron bandwagon provided BJP central leadership gives its final nod.
