After it was revealed that the Delhi government’s inquiry report on Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) contained no charges against Arun Jaitley, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday went on the offensive and demanded that Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal ‘publicly apologise’ to Union finance minister Arun Jaitley for making ‘baseless allegations’ against him.

BJP spokesperson MJ Akbar said, “When the CBI had raided Kejriwal’s principal secretary’s office, he made the DDCA file the basis for accusing Arun Jaitley, but the file does not even mention Jaitley’s name and there is no allegation against him. Kejriwal should apologise and accept in court he has defamed Jaitley.”

Last week, Jaitley had filed two defamation lawsuits against Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) colleagues Deepak Bajpai, Ashutosh, Raghav Chadha, Kumar Vishwas and Sanjay Singh. A criminal defamation case was filed in the Patiala court while a separate Rs10 crore civil defamation case was filed in the Delhi high court.

The Delhi government’s DDCA probe report recommended that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should immediately suspend DDCA, owing to a large number of allegations against it. Jaitley headed DDCA between 1999 and 2013. The probe was ordered after former cricketers Kirti Azad and B S Bedi complained to the Delhi government about irregularities in DDCA’s functioning.

The Delhi government has ordered a commission of inquiry and appointed former solicitor general of India Gopal Subramaniam as its head. “The Delhi government does not have any jurisdiction to order a commission of inquiry in the first place. They could not find anything against Jaitley, who has always had a clean image and now AAP is stooping to such low levels,” said Shrikant Sharma, national secretary, BJP.
