A total of 53 candidates today filed their nominations for the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls in the district.

There was a rush among the candidates to file the nominations as today was an auspicious day (Bahula Padyami) and most of the parties decided their candidates late yesterday, so candidates have to rush against time to file their nominations.

"46 candidates of various parties filed nomination papers for various assembly segments while seven candidates for Visakhapatnam and Anakapalle Lok Sabha seats," said Election Commission officials in the district.

Andhra Pradesh BJP unit president Kambhampati Haribabu filed his nomination for Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha, while CPI(M) candidate Narasinga Rao filed his nominations for both Lok Sabha and assembly elections. He is contesting for Lok Sabha from Visakhapatnam and for the assembly from Gajuwaka.

Other prominent candidates like Gudivada Amarnadh of YSR Congress filed his nomination for the Anakapalle Lok Sabha.

Similarly Thota Vijaya Lakshmi of the Congress and Muthamsetti Srinivasa Rao of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) fielded their nominations papers for the Anakapalle Lok Sabha seat.

TDP's Ganta Srinivasa Rao, YSR Congress' Chinnaboina Srinivasa Rao (Vamsikrishna Yadav), Congress' Pasupeleti Balaraju and TDP's Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy were prominent politicians who filed their nominations for Bheemili, Visakha East, Paderu and Pendurthi assembly segments respectively.

Officials said that so far they have not received a single nomination for the Araku Lok Sabha constituency.

They also said that many candidates from TDP, CPM, CPI, YSR Congress, BJP, Congress, Lok Satta Party, Jai Samaikyandhra Party and few other parties have geared up to file their nomination papers on April 17, since Thursday also happens to be "auspicious".
