The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress on Friday took potshots at each other as the Election Commission announced dates for the Maharashtra Assembly polls, with both parties expressing confidence of forming the next government in the state.

The chief of Maharashtra's BJP unit, Devendra Fadnavis, said the people of the state will not vote for the "corrupt, abusive and vicious" Congress this time. "The BJP and our allies are ready to fight in the elections. More than us, even the public is ready. They know who to bring into power," he added.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Anees Ahmed said the clean image of the incumbent Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan will be decisive in the polls. "We and our party are ready for the elections. Our CM is a very honourable man and is loved by everyone," he told ANI.

Ahmed further said the infighting within the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance will lead to its downfall in the assembly polls. "In the BJP and the Shiv Sena, everyone wants to be the CM and the two parties have a lot of infighting. Everyone wants to be an MLA and everyone has asked for a seat. The BJP and the Shiv Sena have also started fighting amongst each other," he added.

Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath earlier in the day announced the schedule of upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana.

The assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana will be held on October 15 while the counting of votes will take place on October 19.
