Rajashtan: BJP checks rivals with its OBC move

By roping in Saini, BJP is hoping to kill two birds with the same stone. It is trying to steer the Mali community away from ex-CM Ashok Gehlot, while reining in GS Tiwari who can impact Brahmin voters in Shekhawati

The appointment of Madan Lal Saini as the state president is being seen as a masterstroke by the BJP rank and file. The move, apart from appealing to the Other Backward Caste (OBC) voters, it is also expected to put the Congress on the defensive.

Saini represents one of the main castes, Mali, in the OBC pie. About 50 per cent of the voters in the state belong to the OBC category. Of these, about 62,000 voters belong to the Mali community. Saini’s appointment is aimed at helping the party get the OBC voter in its fold, which consists of Soni, Nai, Kumawat, Ravana Rajput and Gurjar other than the Jats. There are about 75 seats in the state, where OBC vote is the deciding factor.

The move is also seen as a ploy to tackle former CM Ashok Gehlot’s clout in the community. Gehlot hails from the Mali community and BJP hopes that Saini will help in breaching the fortress of Gehlot in state.

Ending the uncertainty of 74 days, the three major factions – the RSS, Om Prakash Mathur and chief minister Vasundhara Raje – all agreed on the name of Madan Lal Saini.

Saini is considered to be close to Mathur. But his clean image and personality paved the way for all factions giving their nod.

The central leadership has chosen a face as state president, which will give the BJP organisational, social and political benefits. Saini’s image is of an ordinary, disciplined and loyal worker in organisational terms and his association with the RSS further has helped him ascend the political throne.

He started his political journey with the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, a frontal organisation of the RSS and then joined the BJP’s Kisan Morcha.

Considered a disciplined and punctual leader, Saini was never involved in any controversy. Known for his punctuality, and meeting  with workers, he has been a member of state disciplinary committee of the party.

The other reason why Saini’s appointment is expected to benefit the party is that he hails from the Shekhawati region. Ghanshyam Tiwari, who had quit the BJP and recently formed a new political party, is also the leader who hails from Sikar area of Shekhawati region. By appointing Saini, the party has decided to take tiwari head-on and contain his outreach in the region.
