A BJP supported candidate emerged victorious as Sarpanch of Khatkhari village Panchayat in recounting of paper ballots held today for the election, which he had lost to a Congress candidate four years ago.

"In the recounting, Pradyumn Saket defeated Ram Karan by 29 votes. While Saket secured 830 votes, Karan got 801 ballots," said Singrauli Tehsildar Bhagirath Bakhla.

In 2013, Saket, who was backed by the BJP, lost the election of Khatkhari panchayat in Waidhan Janpad to Karan, who was supported by the Congress, by 59 ballots.

Unhappy with the outcome, Saket filed a revision petition in the court of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) seeking recounting of ballot papers.

The SDM, Ramsumiran Pradhan, ordered recounting of the votes on February 22 this year.

Unsatisfied with the SDM's order, Karan approached the Collector cum District Magistrate Shivnarayan Chauhan, who stayed the SDM's order.

However, on April 17, the Collector disposed off Karan's plea and upheld the SDM's decision.

Following this, the recounting of ballot papers took place today.
