The BJP on Wednesday alleged that rape cases in Jammu and Kashmir had increased and threatened to launch an agitation against the Omar Abdullah government if it failed to check crime against women.

"We warn the government to act immediately and check increasing crime against women, failing which the party will launch an agitation," state BJP vice-president Sakina Bano told reporters in Jammu."Women will hit the streets in large numbers if the government fails to curb crime against them," she said.

"The crime against women has gone up by 75% in Jammu and Kashmir. In 2012, 303 rape cases were registered. These went up to 378 last year," she said.

The rise in crime against women showed the state government was insensitive towards safety and security of women, Bano said. The BJP leader demanded stern action against hospital authorities in Nowshera and Rajouri for "harassing a rape victim and his father". She appealed to the Chief Minister to suspend the hospital staff for "ill-behaviour".

Bano also asked the Chief Minister to ensure speedy trial of perpetrators of rape.
