The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged that many senior Congress Party leaders have stashed away black money not only abroad, but also at home.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra accused Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi of evading taxes to generate black money.

He was reacting to the Income Tax Department's Settlement Commission move to slap Singhvi with a penalty of Rs. 56.57 crore, and its decision to add over Rs. 91.95 crore to his declared professional income for a period of three years.

Patra said the Income Tax Department also contested Singhvi's claim that he purchased laptops worth Rs. 5 crore for his staff members over three financial years.

"Tax evasion that Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a tall leader of the Congress party, has done comes out with the expression as to how black money is generated in India. The commission has slapped a penalty of 56.75 crore on Abhishek Manu Singhvi," he said.

Patra added that in a short time frame between January 15, 2011 and March 31, 2011, there has been a substantial increase in payments to legal assistance by Singhvi.

Referring to bogus payments, Patra said that between 2011-2013, Singhvi had signed 18,199 cheques. On a single day, March 31, 2011, about 1207 vouchers were signed.

"The exposure of bogus payments made by Abhishek Manu Singhvi, he has signed some cheques to the tune of approximately Rs. 10.97 crore. And the authenticity of these could not be verified. These were non-verifiable," he said.

Singhvi had earlier told the I-T Commission that termite destroyed all records, when asked about vouchers.

"Singhvi ironically has no documents to back his expenses. Upon being asked as to what happen to the documents, Mr. Singhvi says that termite ate it all," said Patra.

However, Singhvi claimed that he spent Rs. 35.98 crore on the purchase of Solar Panel for his company. The IT department found that the transaction was mainly intended at tax evasion by inflating the cost of the panels.
