As many as 70 local workers and leaders of BJP, ABVP and VHP were detained on Sunday for unlawful assembly for demanding removal of a "dangerous" wall of Eidgah near Karimnagar Municipal Corporation (KMC), police said.

Tension prevailed after the local functionaries of BJP, ABVP and VHP assembled near the Eidgah and demanded that the structure which they claimed was "causing inconvenience to public" be removed.

Due to rain last night, the wall had crumbled to a large extent. Telangana Finance Minister Etala Rajender, along with Karimnagar MLA Gangula Kamalakar and Mayor S Ravinder Singh, visited the site and assured that the government would get the Eidgah wall reconstructed. However, later the local BJP, VHP and ABVP leaders reached the place.

"The demand for removal of Eidgah wall located near the civic body was long pending as it was causing inconvenience to the public," corporator Bandi Sanjay Kumar said.

The Town Police arrested Bandi Sanjay Kumar, VHP district secretary Komalla Rajender Reddy, Bethi Mahender Reddy and 67 others under IPC section 151 (knowingly joining or continuing in assembly of five or more persons after it has been commanded to disperse) and other relevant provisions. However, they were released later, told Police.
