In a bizarre move, the education department in BJP-ruled Haryana has barred school teachers from wearing jeans at work. The order has been issued to elementary and middle school teachers.
According to a Hindustan Times report, though the four-line directive did not mention any reason for the ban, teachers had been asked to dress 'appropriately' and wear only formal clothes "to set an example".
“Teachers ask students to maintain discipline, including wearing school uniforms. They themselves should wear formal attire to set an example,” an education official defending the order told HT.
The order issued on June 4 has also directed the teachers not to visit the Directorate of Education in Chandigarh in western attire.
“Besides banning jeans, we will ensure they do not come in flashy clothes, such as a red shirt or a loud printed one. Also, all the shirt buttons should be fastened,” he said. The orders would be applicable for teachers in secondary schools too," PK Das, Additional Chief Secretary, School Education Department told the Tribune.
Meanwhile, Deepak Goswami, general secretary of the Rajkiya Prathmik Shikshak Sangh, said such a step should have been taken after consultation with teachers’ associations.
However, later in the day, CM Manohar Lal Khattar claimed that no such order has been issued.
