In the last few days, a tweet had gone viral which purportedly shows the POTUS’ support for Yogi Adityanath. The tweet, which was doing the rounds, read: “Yogi is like my younger bro. A great leader. Like I'm leading US, he'll lead UP. UP me rehna hai to Yogi Yogi Kehna hai."

While the tweet was fake, the new Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister is a known admirer of Donald Trump. While Trump’s travel ban had faced almost universal criticism, one person who seemed to be a big fan was Yogi Adityanath. Speaking in January, he had said that similar action should be taken in India. “Similar action is needed to contain terror activities in this country."

It is no surprise that Adityanath would sing a similar tune as Trump given he had been saying similar thing about Muslims. He had alleged that the situation in western UP was like Kashmir three decades ago when "Kashmiri Pandits were terrorised and forced to leave". He had also claimed that the situation was grim in other places in UP like Baghpat, Meerut and Ghaziabad.

He had said: “Issues like the exodus of Hindus from Kairana, love jihad and women’s safety will dominate the poll scene. Yogi is not talking about today, Yogi is talking about the future. The BJP will not let western Uttar Pradesh turn into another Kashmir. Political leaders in this country speak against the majority community in the name of secularism. Governments in UP give land for kabristans (graveyards) but not for shamshanghats (cremation grounds)."

In an undated video, he was quoted as saying: “If one Hindu girl is converted, we will convert 100 Muslims girls...The way Hindu girls are insulted, I don’t think a civilised society would accept it...If the government is not doing anything, then the Hindus will have to take matters into their own hands.”

He had also compared Shah Rukh Khan to Hafiz Saeed saying: “Shah Rukh Khan should remember that if a huge mass in (the) society boycotts his films, he will also have to wander on streets like a normal Muslim... I think there is no difference between the language of Shah Rukh Khan and (Pakistan terror mastermind) Hafiz Saeed.”

He has also taken offence to those who opposed yoga he had said: “Lord Shankar was the biggest Yogi who started Yoga. Mahadev lives in every particle of this country. So, those who want to avoid Yoga and Lord Shankar, can leave Hindustan.”

He had also claimed that the possibility of riots was directly proportional to the number of Muslims present in an area. He had said: “There have been 450 riots in west UP in two-and-a-half years of Samajwadi Party because the population of a particular community is rising manifold. In places where there are 10-20% minority population, stray communal incidents take place. Where there are 20-35% of them, serious communal riots take place and where they are more than 35%, there is no place for non-Muslims.”
