A prominent Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) leader was shot dead in Ferozabad district of Uttar Pradesh outside his house by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants. Taking serious note of the murder, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the police to arrest the assailants at the earliest and also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs to the family of 33-year-old Sandeep Sharma.

Superintendent of Police RK Singh has suspended a police inspector in connection with the case, and said that prima facie, personal enmity seems to be the motive. He claimed that assailants knew the deceased well and called him on his mobile to lure him out of the house.

Sharma, a RSS city mahanagar chief of Ferozabad district, was having dinner with family when he got a call on his mobile on Tuesday night. He came out of his house, while talking o the phone and had barely walked 10 metres away from his house when two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants came from behind and shot him at point-blank range.

On hearing the gunshot, his family members and neighbours rushed outside and saw him lying in a pool of blood. They rushed him to the Unity Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

BJP MLA Maneesh Asheeja, RSS leaders Ramakant Upadhyay and Sharma's supporters rushed to the hospital, while BJP Minister Neelkant Tiwari and RSS Braj area organising secretary Bhawani Singh directed senior police officials to arrest the assailants.

Later, BJP and RSS workers gheraoed the SP office and raised slogans against the police. They alleged that Sharma had sought protection from police but was denied. They lifted the demonstration only after assurance of adequate compensation and immediate arrest of the killers.

Eye-witnesses say Sharma was shocked to see the assailants and tried to run back home. This clearly suggests that Sharma and assailants knew each other, said Arun Kumar, Circle Officer. A case has been registered against unidentified persons.

"We have sought Sharma's call detail records and are seeking footage of the CCTVs installed in the area to ascertain the identity of the assailants. Two persons have been detained for questioning," said the SP.
