A Saudi-based labourer was booked after his wife alleged that her husband pronounced the word ‘talaq’ thrice over the phone and gave her a divorce after she gave birth to twin girls, the police said.

The police arrested Nooral Haq, father of  Ikramul Haq, as a co-accused in the case.  Farzana Khatoon, a resident of Maheshpur village in Supaul district was married to Ikramul Haq, a resident of Basbitti. Farzana gave birth to a girl child on August 20 last year but her in-laws were unhappy after her child’s birth. However, 11 months later, she passed away. Farzana was also expecting her second child. On July 17, this year, she gave birth to twin girls.

After she was discharged from the hospital, her in-laws began pressurising her to get Rs 2 lakh from her parents or they will not allow the twin girls to stay in their house. Farzana, however, refused to get money from her parents.

After the divorce, Farzana went back to her parent’s house with her newborn babies and approached the Mahila police station in Supaul district of Bihar. “Farzana approached us and filed a complaint against her husband and in-laws for saying ‘talaq’ over the phone and for asking money from the girl’s parents,” Sub Divisional Police Officer, Vidyasagar said.

The police said they are investigating the matter and have assured Farzana that strict action will be taken against Ikramul. “We will ensure justice to Farzana and take strict action against Ikramul,” Vidyasagar said.
