One woman, who was among the 11 who went missing from short-stay Swadhar home run by Brajesh Thakur, was found by the Muzaffarpur police on Tuesday.

"An FIR was lodged in connection with the missing women of short-stay Swadhar home run by Thakur's NGO on July 30 by the Social Welfare Department, Bihar. The police immediately commenced the investigation and one of the woman has been found. We will talk to her and try to find out about the other too," a police source in Muzaffarpur told DNA.

A CBI team, which took over the Balika Grih case on July 29, is also in Muzaffarpur to probe the case. A source said they have talked to some of the neighbours of Thakur, who have confirmed of irregular activities at the shelter home, and said they were quiet till now because of Thakur's clout.

"One neighbour said the girls could often be heard screaming and shouting even though he could not see them as there was no window or ventilator in the shelter home. Another said the shelter home had many visitors while one alleged that Brajesh had not let them put CCTV cameras in the locality when they wanted it for security purposes," the source said.

He added, "The police are also looking into claims of a secret staircase in the newspaper office of Thakur, which led to the Balika Grih. Why and when was it built and for what purpose was it used… the newspaper office staff will be interrogated about it."

He said, "The CBI is also on the lookout of Madhu, who is believed to be a close aide of Thakur and was a functionary in his NGO. She knew Thakur for over a decade and is believed to be his partner in crime."

The police on Tuesday also raided an old-age home in Samastipur run by an NGO of Thakur, who is the main accused in the rape and torture of at least 34 girls at a state-run Balika Grih in Muzaffarpur apart from other illegal acts. "The old-age home along with his other properties near Azad chowk in Samastipur were searched by the officials. The house there is in Thakur's mother's name," the source said.

Soil, Clothes Sent For FSL

A Muzaffarpur court has granted permission to the Muzaffarpur police to conduct forensic investigation of the soil, which was dug out from the campus of the Balika Grih on the complaints of some residents that a girl had been murdered and buried there. The police also presented some clothes seized at the shelter home before Judge R P Tiwari, who directed to send them for FSL testing. However, questions are being raised on why did the police delay in presenting the soil sample and clothes before the court, when the seizure was made around two weeks ago.

One More Arrest

The Bhagalpur police has arrested Pradeep Sharma, former superintendent of a state-run Bal Grih in the district, on charges of abusing the residents there. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) had also conducted a social audit of the facility in which the children had complained about Sharma and other irregularities had come to light. Sharma has been remanded in judicial custody.
