Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Nasim Zaidi and other senior Election Commission officials on Saturday met district-level officials to discuss security plans for the Bihar assembly elections. They had arrived in Patna yesterday to assess preparations for the upcoming polls.

He said that the the EC's district level officials were asked to propagate information about the entire electoral process so citizens left out will able to register to vote. He spoke about when the photo voter list would be available, "The photo voter list has to be distributed at least 5 days before. We have issued a helpline 1950 on district level, for assistance."

Zaidi said that that voter list given to the candidates and the one available with the presiding officer will have to be identical. "Good thing about electoral rolls here (Patna) is that there is 99.98% photo electoral roll," he added.

He spoke about the requests made by political parties. He said that they had asked the EC to make effective arrangements so that weaker sections do not feel threatened. "They have highlighted the need to maintain social and communal harmony during election process. They have requested the Election Commission to take appropriate steps so that communal harmony is maintained all throughout the process," Zaidi said.

He said that the parties have requested the Election Commission to establish a single window system so that they are able to get permissions in time.

He ensured that the district officials were ordered to field level machinery on basis of feedback received from parties and some of seior officials suggestions. "We have directed them that they will have to re-dedicate themselves to conduct fair, peaceful and voter friendly," he said.

The assembly polls in Bihar, slated for late this year, will be a heated affair, with six parties having merged under the Janata Parivar banner contesting against the BJP and the Congress.
