Nitish Kumar will be the chief ministerial candidate for Janata Dal United and Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance for the Bihar assembly elections due in September-October this year.

Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav  made the announcement in presence of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Addressing press conference, Lalu Prasad Yadav said, "We had asked Mulayam Singh ji to take a call on the matter, and he declared that Nitish Kumar will be the CM candidate."

Earlier in the day, Nitish Kumar held a press conference in Patna confirmed that Janata Dal (United), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress.

"Three members, each from RJD and JD(U) will meet on Tuesday and have a discussion on seat distribution."

He further added, "The JD(U) government is being supported by the  Congress, RJD and the Communist Party of India. Even in the by-elections the Congress and the RJD coordinated with the JDU."

When asked about having a meeting with Rahul Gandhi on Sunday, the JD(U) Chief said, "We discussed various matters with Rahul Gandhi but nothing that would interest you."

The Bihar Chief Minister's meeting with Rahul lasted over an hour amid talks of a broader "secular alliance" to take on BJP.

Congress President, Sonia Gandhi is likely to meet RJD Chief Lalu Prasad on Monday to discuss the issue of alliance for Bihar polls.

While JD(U) has been insisting on Nitish to be declared as the chief ministerial candidate, Lalu has maintained that the issue can be addressed later.
