A newborn baby died after he was allegedly bitten by rats in the Intensive Care Unit of a government hospital in Darbhanga in Bihar.

The hospital administration though, has denied the charges, and said the baby died due to an illness.

According to the baby's parents, the nine-day-old infant was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) a couple of days ago as he was suffering from multiple ailments such as heart trouble and breathing difficulties.

"When we visited him in the NICU, we could see that his hands and legs had rat bites and blood was oozing from the scars, even though the doctors had tried to bandage them. There was no doctor or nurse on duty when we went to see our baby," said Puran Chaupal, father of the baby.

He alleged that it was gross negligence on the part of the hospital administration that no medical practitioner was present in the NICU and that his baby was bitten by rats. Puran and his wife Neelam, residents of Madhubani district, met Darbhanga District Magistrate KP Mahto and demanded action against the hospital. Mahto assured them of a probe.

The hospital administration, however, denied rat bites were the cause of the baby's death. "He was brought here in a critical condition. The oxygen supply to his brain was restricted and he had heart and breathing troubles. We tried our best to revive him. Also, there are no rat bite scars on the baby's body, as is being claimed by the parents," a senior doctor said.
