Over 1,000 students have been expelled for cheating in the Bihar Board Intermediate Examinations, it has been reported.

According to news agency ANI, while 985 students have been expelled for cheating, 25 have been caught writing the exams on behalf of another candidate in the examinations.

According to an IANS report, Anand Kishore, the Chairman of the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB), told the media in Patna that more the students were expelled "for adopting unfair means" during the examinations that concluded on Friday.

The report added that Kishore said that 25 fake examiners were also caught and FIRs were lodged against guardians for helping their wards to cheat in the examinations.

Nearly 112,07,986 students appeared for the Class 12 exams at 1,384 centres across the state.

Mass cheating has been reported in Bihar for years.

Last year, the Class 12 Arts topper turned out to be a 42-year-old man, who had faked his age to take the test. He was arrested on charges of fraud.

In 2015, the HRD Ministry sought a report from Bihar government over reports of rampant cheating during board exams in the state.

Last year, the Uttar Pradesh government had compared examination cheating to ‘a cancer’.

"India will be having the largest young population by 2025. It is essential that the youths become assets, and not liabilities, for the country. This can be ensured through quality education," Governor Ram Naik said.

The governor said a university was measured not just by the quality of its buildings and faculty, but by the calibre of its students.

"Hence, it is essential that our youths focus on all-round development of their personalities and do not end up being mere bookworms," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma noted the Yogi Adityanath administration would soon bring a new policy on holding elections of students unions.
