An engineer in Bihar has alleged that he was kidnapped and forced to marry a school dropout at gunpoint in Bihar’s Vaishali district, in the latest instance of “pakaduah vivah” in the state. The bride’s family though, have denied the charges and alleged that the groom had demanded a dowry for the wedding.

Durga Sharan, an engineer in the Indian Railways in Samastipur, was allegedly abducted in Jandaha in Vaishali where he had gone to visit a family member on Saturday evening. His mother, Veena Devi, lodged an FIR with the police regarding the incident. The cops rescued the engineer from Vaishali’s Raghopur village on Sunday.

“In his statement, Sharan said he was kidnapped at gunpoint and forced to marry a girl whom he had not known before. This happened on the interceding night of Saturday and Sunday. The girl’s father along with five others have been named accused in the case,” a police source said. The bride’s family, however, said Sharan was known to the girl for the last one year through some common friend.
