Suspended BJP leader Manoj Baitha, who was absconding after allegedly running over at least nine schoolchildren in an inebriated state in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district on February 24, surrendered before the local police early on Wednesday morning.

Confirming the development, Muzaffarpur SSP Vivek Kumar said Baitha surrendered at his official residence after midnight. “He was injured and sent to a local hospital for preliminary treatment. From there, he was referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital, where he has been admitted for further treatment,” Kumar said.

A local police source said Baitha had sustained multiple injuries on his head and hand, after his vehicle hit the children and barged into a tree off the highway. “He has not spoken much due to the injuries. A police team is keeping a close watch on him,” a senior Bihar Police official said.

The police have already established that Baitha, the sole accused in the FIR, was on the spot at the time of the accident through his call detail records. Police said the CCTV footage and eye-witnesses have corroborated that Baitha was driving the vehicle, though he has reportedly denied it in preliminary investigation.

He claimed Baitha was forced to surrender due to the continuous raids by the special investigation team. “We have got to know that Baitha got stitches and first aid while he was on the run. We will track the doctor who treated him and will question why he did not inform us about his whereabouts,” he said.

Baitha, a district-level worker of the ruling BJP was suspended from the party on Monday after initial denial that he had anything to do with the saffron party.

The Opposition had alleged that the Bihar government was shielding Baitha as he was a BJP member. Congress President Rahul Gandhi had questioned the implementation of prohibition in Bihar. Leader of the Opposition in Bihar legislative assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said, “We had already said Baitha will surrender after a few days, when he comes out of his inebriated state and alcohol can no longer be traced in any medical examination.”
