The flooding in thirteen districts of Bihar has claimed 130 lives and 88 lakh 47 thousand people have been affected. The situation continues to remain alarming in the affected areas. The worst damage has occurred in Sitamarhi, Madhubani and Darbhanga districts where 81 people have died while the state government has started the work of estimating the total damage.

The floodwater has receded in some parts while others remain submerged. Sitamarhi is the worst-hit part where 37 people have died, followed by Madhubani with 30 deaths and Darbhanga reporting 14 casualties.

Flood water remains intact in many areas but fearing the safety and concern of their property, people have returned to their homes despite the danger. This has led the number of relief camps in the flood-affected area reduced considerably. Now only 4 camps are left in two districts sheltering 1250 people.

At Sitamarhi, 350 people are living in a relief camp while the one at Muzaffarpur is hosting 900 people. Considering the shortage of food, community kitchens are still being run on a large scale. A total of 442 community kitchens are still operating in the flood-hit areas, most of them being run in Darbhanga, 333, and 55 kitchens in Madhubani.

Although the water level may have reduced in some parts, in view of the potential danger, teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are still in flood-affected areas. Now, 27 NDRF and SDRF teams are engaged in rescue operations in flood-affected areas. 876 relief personnel are engaged in relief efforts, while 133 motorboats are ferrying men and resources across.

As the water level slowly recedes, the estimation of damage by the government has also started. According to the preliminary investigation report, 2679 rural roads and 26 bridges have been damaged in the flood. On 500 roads, the traffic has been turned on through alternate arrangements.

Madhubani have 458 rural roads damaged followed by Shivarhat, 430, Sitamarhi, 257 and Darbhanga, 258. The government has now started estimating the loss of farmers' crops and houses.
