The drug consumption in Patna, capital of Bihar has significantly increased after a statewide ban has been imposed on alcohol. As a result, an increase in the secretive supply and sale of narcotics like brown sugar has been observed.

The fact was proven true when a team of police officers from Jakkanpur in Patna confiscated nearly 25 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 50 lakh in the international market during a raid. In addition to this, the police also recovered mobile phones and Rs. 12,000 in cash.

A total of four accused, Rajesh Yadav alias Kariman of Etbarpur, Sonu Kumar of Bihta, Ganesh Kumar and Santosh Kumar of Parsa Bazar.have been held by the police for drug trafficking. The entire raid was planned when Station House Officer Mukesh Kumar Verma had received some secret information about the matter. After combining the information and local intelligence, the raid was orchestrated.

Further police investigations revealed that the accused had rented out a flat to carry out the illegal drug operations. During the raid, the police caught the accused red-handed while they were making packets of the drug.

According to Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar, "The accused have claimed innocence and said that they had been forcibly inducted into the illegal business." Kumar also said that the accused had made packets of 99.4 grams and 59.4 grams along with a total of 110 packets weighing half gram each.

The arrests of these four accused led to one more arrest. The accused, Mithilesh Kumar was arrested subsequently and the team of police officers recovered 100 more packets of brown sugar. Kumar said that the prime accused is Kariman.

On November 26, 2015, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced that alcohol would be banned in the state from April 1, 2016.

Due to the liquor ban in Bihar, police regularly raid establishments suspected of housing drinkers of liquor or sites where they are illegally peddled. With total prohibition in place in Bihar, bootleggers are using school bags for smuggling and doorstep delivery of alcohol in the state.

The idea may have been picked up by them from the silver screen. Bihar Police have rounded up a number of high schools and college students for their alleged involvement in bootlegging of liquor in the state.
