Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, who is under sharp criticism from the Janata Dal (United) for being defiant, met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh here on Sunday.

Manjhi's meeting with Rajnath assumes significance as the JD (U) has alleged that the former is working at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Manjhi is presently in the national capital to attend the wedding reception of BJP president Amit Shah's son. JD (U) state president in Bihar, Vashistha Narayan Singh, earlier in the day said that the BJP was responsible for the ongoing political crisis in the state.

"One thing is clearly visible that since the time Congress party lost power in New Delhi, BJP was planning so that they do not lose in Bihar. So, recently they have created this political tension as they have always done this behind the curtain," he said in Patna. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Ramchandra Purve also echoed similar sentiments.

"I don't think parliamentary democracy can be conducted smoothly in Bihar now because RSS, BJP and Narendra Modi are trying to spoil it through Sushil Modi and Jitan Ram Manjhi," he said. Senior JD (U) leader and former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar had earlier accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP of 'attempting to throttle democracy'.

Kumar also alleged that the Bihar Governor's decision to ask Manjhi to prove his majority in the state assembly on February 20 has been scripted in Delhi and is designed to 'allow horse-trading of MLAs'. Kumar, who is engaged in an intense tussle with Manjhi - the man he picked nine months ago to be the chief minister when he resigned after his party's defeat in the Lok Sabha polls -, had earlier this week met President
Pranab Mukherjee to convey the support of 130 MLAs.

Kumar, who was accompanied by JD (U) chief Sharad Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, took the 130 MLAs to the Rashtrapati Bhavan to show that he enjoys majority support in the Bihar Assembly.
