The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) found itself in the midst of a new row when reports of the state exam board providing incorrect model answers to teachers evaluating answersheets of matriculation examinees surfaced on Monday.

One of the questions “Which of the following is not used as a cooking fuel? (a) CNG (b) LPG (c) Bio Gas (d) Coal” says “(b) LGP” is the correct answer instead of “(a) CNG”.

In another question, “Which type of mirror is used in front of driver?”, the BSEB model answer says “convex lens” instead of convex mirror, as per subject experts.

Similarly, the question “Write two excretory substances of human being” has its answer as “kidney and lungs” instead of the correct answer urea and uric acid (as per teachers). According to the BSEB model answer for the question “Which of the following is a strong acid? (a) H2SO4 (b) HCl (c) HNO3 (d) All of these” only H2SO4 is a strong acid, but experts says “(d) All of these” should be the correct answer.

The anomalies, which have come to light, pertain to the Science paper. Apart from wrong questions, some answers have spelling mistakes that change the meaning of the word. Even the marking scheme of the model answer paper is different from the question paper, creating confusion among the evaluators.

Such gaffes have left the fate of more than 17.5 lakh students, who took the Class 10 exam of BSEB this year, hanging in balance as BSEB sources claim that “evaluation process is complete and results were likely to be declared later this month.”

However, a senior BSEB official said, “The subject experts are looking into the matter. We will ensure that the students don’t have to suffer at any cost.”

The BSEB, which was grappling with the infamy of Intermediate topper scam 2016 and mass-scale cheating in matriculation exams in 2015, had tried to streamline the examination and evaluation process with the help of technology. “However, it seems the board officials got over-excited with the changes and it failed to work,” said Bihar Secondary School Teachers’ Association president and MLC Kedar Nath Pandey.

A government school teacher, on the condition of anonymity, said, “Engaging the services of primary and middle school teachers in evaluation of Class 10 answersheets by the BSEB was also wrong. None of them pointed these mistakes. If the BSEB itself provides wrong ‘model answers’ for simple questions, how can you blame a Ruby Roy for thinking ‘prodigal’ science as a subject related to cookery?”
