Bihar adopts GST in one voice, Nitish terms it 'historic moment'

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who was also present in the Assembly during passage of the Bill, described the passing of GST by all the parties together as "a historic moment".

Bihar Assembly on Monday unanimously adopted the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill, becoming the second state after Telangana to pave way for rollout of a single-tax regime from July 1.

A special sitting of the Bihar Legislative Assembly as well as Legislative Council adopted the Bills related to GST with one voice. While the ruling Mahagathbandhan, comprising of JD(U), RJD and Congress, and the Opposition BJP-led NDA voted for the motion, three MLAs of CPI(ML-Liberation) opposed it, terming it "pro-corporate". In council, it was adopted unanimously.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who was also present in the Assembly during passage of the Bill, described the passing of GST by all the parties together as "a historic moment".

Tabling the related Bills, Bihar Commercial Taxes Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav, termed the new taxation system as pro-poor and said that states stand to benefit in the benefit of the states. "Yes, there were initial complications. But, we know that the GST will be beneficial for the entire country, and Bihar is also a part of this country," he said.

He reminded the House that Nitish had supported GST even when the then ally BJP was opposed to the Congress' proposed tax reform.

Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Sushil Kumar Modi, who had headed a ministerial committee on GST during NDA rule in Bihar, expressed happiness over adoption of GST related bills with the help of all the parties.

He expressed thanks to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for standing in favour of GST from the beginning. "On his advise, I had accepted Chairmanship of GST as Finance minister of the state during NDA rule," the senior BJP leader said.

MP Assembly to meet on May 3

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh government has convened a day-long special session of the state Assembly on May 3 here to ratify the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill-2017. The Parliament on April 6 passed four legislations to pave the way for roll out GST from July.
