A local Tantrik was arrested after police found about 21 human skulls along with some bones from a place near Konark Sun Temple. Police suspects these were used in tantric or black magic rituals through human sacrifice.

The skulls and bones were sent for forensic test.

The skulls were found under a bridge on the Kushbhadra-Likhia river along with bones, a girl child's dress, dry flowers and vermillion powder. Among these 15 skulls belong to adult and rests are child skulls. Police also found skulls of 2 buffalos and bones of human hands and legs.

These were seized by police after some tourists informed officials in Ramchandi police station on Puri-Konark marine drive road. The bridge is only 3 km away from the police station and 14 km from world famous Sun Temple of Konark.

The tantrik, Padia Baba, told the police he was stealing skulls from a graveyard for the past five years for rituals. He said that the skulls and bones were dumped under the bridge by his assistant's son who did not approve of his father's work. The assistant died on 13 November. The police began investigation from human sacrifice angle. "We have sent the skulls for forensic examination. We will be able to come to any conclusion only after we get the reports," said Subhash Mohanty, SDPO.

In rural and poorer parts of Odisha many people practised black magic believing that it will provide benefits such as helping childless women to bear children, cure illnesses, find hidden treasure and producing more rainfall.
