Amid pressure mounting on office bearers at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) responsible for the lapse of security at the campus and mishandling of the protests staged by the students, the chief proctor of the university has resigned, taking moral responsibility for the recent incidents of molestation and violence inside the premises of the university.

Chief Proctor, Professor ON Singh submitted his resignation late on Tuesday night. Violent protests and police lathi-charge to control the agitating students at BHU has attracted condemnation from all quarters. If that was not enough, officer bearers have indulged in making irresponsible statements which have further vitiated the environment.

Proctor O N Singh was considered to be one of the aides of the Vice Chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi.

A number of students were hurt when clashes broke out between the police and students of the BHU after the students started protesting against alleged molestation of a girl.

Earlier on Tuesday, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police (DG) Uttar Pradesh and the BHU Vice-Chancellor seeking a detailed report on the matter and submit his response within four weeks.

The NHRC, in its statement, said, "Suo motu cognisance taken in the subsequent use of unwarranted manhandling and thrashing of agitating students, mostly women, by UP police."

The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday said the vice-chancellor should act as a responsible administrator and ensure the safety and dignity of women on the campus.

The commission also hit out at VC Girish Chandra Tripathi over his reported remarks that BHU cannot pay heed to “every demand of every girl”. Several students, including women, and two journalists were injured in police action at BHU where a protest on Saturday night against an alleged molestation incident turned violent.
