Students of  Banaras Hindu University (BHU) were left puzzled when they were asked to write about the nature of GST in Kautilya's Arthashastra in examination.

The Political Science paper for MA (Master of Arts) in BHU had two unusual 15-mark questions on Monday. The students were left baffled when they had to choose between to write an essay on the nature of GST in Kautilya’s Arthashastra or a discussion on 'Manu is the first Indian thinker of globalisation', according to an Indian Express report. The questions on these topics were set for the paper ‘Social and Political Thought in Ancient and Medieval India’ of MA.

While the students complained that the topics were not part of the syllabus, the professor who set the question paper said he only "interpreted the two thinkers and taught their philosophies through new and current examples like GST and globalisation."

Professor Kaushal Kishore Mishra admitted that it was his idea to introduce the questions in the exam as he believes it is a newer way to teach the students about the latest topics. Professor Mishra, a professor at BHU's Faculty of Social Sciences, is an RSS member but said the questions have nothing to do with his personal beliefs and what he teaches his students.

One of the BHU student had admitted that they were taught by Professor Mishra about the GST-Kautilya question in class and were asked to take notes. They were warned by the professor that they may face such questions in the examination. An outraged BHU student slammed the college administration for "ridiculous and unpalatable questions" in the paper and said they are taught about the fictitious subjects like just to "validate" the government policies.
