In less than 24 hours, the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) got its first Woman Chief Proctor in 101 years of history. Prof Royana Singh of Anatomy department, was appointed as the new Chief Proctor.

A decision to this effect was taken by the BHU Vice-Chancellor Dr GC Tripathi after holding meeting with female students of the university on late Wedneday. During the meeting, female students had suggested for a woman Chief Proctor who could be sensitive to their issues. The V-C had assured them to look into their demand.

After the Varanasi Commissioner Nitin Gokran’s report, the Chief Proctor ON Singh had owned the moral responsibility and had resigned on late Tuesday night. He was replaced by Prof MK Singh of the Eye department as acting Chief Proctor on Wednesday.

Acting on female students demand, a mellowed down Prof Tripathi replaced Prof MK Singh with Prof Roina Singh. This is being viewed a first major victory of agitating girls against the BHU administration.

Born in French city Royana, her parents came back to India after her primary education there. Both her parents were professors in BHU Her father Indrasen Singh was a Professor in Genetics department while mother retired as Professor in Plant Physiology.

Currently, Prof Roina Singh is heading Women Grievance Cell. She also held the post of Deputy Chief  Proctor in the past. Her husband is a renowned surgeon of Varanasi. Hailing from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, Royana Singh had taught at BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur before joining the BHU.

Talking to mediapersons after taking over the charge, Prof Royana Singh said that security of female students and staffers would be her top priority.  She appealed to all female students to save helpline number 08004922000 in their mobile and e.mail id wgcbhu@gmail.com for reporting any eve-teasing incident.

“I assure you that our team will reach the spot within ten minutes to initiate immediate action against eve-teasers,” she announced.

“My top priority is to light up the hostel area, ensure all CCTV cameras are functional, women guards at girls’ hostels and round the clock male guards at male students’ hostels,” she said.

It may be recalled that BHU was on a boiling cauldron since September 22 when female students staged a massive dharna at the main gate following an incident of molestation within the campus a day earlier. Violence erupted on September 23 night when police entered and baton-charged agitating students resulting in injuries to several students and journalists covering the event.
