Two days after a non-violent protest by the girl students of the Banaras Hindu University was brutally removed by midnight lathicharge, Varansai District Magistrate wrote to Vice-Chancellor GC Tripathi.

The letter, which is with the DNA, shows the blatant disregard by the BHU authorities on the issue of women safety.

The educational institute with over 30,000 students doesn't have any panel addressing the concerns of women safety.

Despite the Supreme Court's order, the BHU did not constitute Vishkha Committee till date.

The state of affairs can be gauged from the fact that in January this year, a women's cell and helpline were announced by the Vice-Chancellor. However, just two days later, a drunken cop allegedly misbehaved with two female students of IIT-BHU. And no action was taken against him.

Spread in over 2,700 acres, the BHU has three main entrances. The entire city of Varanasi practically uses the campus roads daily.

So, it is very difficult to pin-point the culprits. Thing could have been better had the authorities installed enough CCTVs.

The DM has also written about the issue to GC Tripathi.

Apart from lack of CCTVs, there are not enough women police personnel guarding the girls hostels.

Supporting demands female students, however, the DM asked the V-C to install CCTV cameras and deployment of women security guards in the campus, particularly in and around girls hostels. He also suggested formation of proctorial team for surprise checking and continuous dialogue with students to avoid such incidents.

The DM has also ordered closure of all schools and colleges in Varanasi till further notice. Earlier, the DM had asked the V-C to change the uniform of the BHU security guards from khaki to some other colour as it was creating a lot of confusion.

In a delayed reaction, the Uttar Pradesh government on Monday suspended the three Additional City Magistrates (ACMs) and two police officers over unprovoked lathicharge on Saturday.

The politics over the incident has intensified with Congress, Left and Samajawadi Party blaming the ruling Yogi Adityanath government for the failure to protect the girl students.
