Just 80 kms outside Bhopal is Sanka Jagir, a village that has not seen childbirth for around 400 years because of its belief that it is 'cursed'. Reportedly, a temple of Lord Krishna at its entrance that is home to a small parasol called 'Shyamji ki Chattri' is cited as the reason for the villagers being deprived of hearing a newborn baby cry for all these years as no woman has given birth in the village limits.

According to the villagers, the story dates back to 16th century when Maharani Bhagyavati ordered a temple to be constructed in the memory of her martyr husband Maharaj Shyam Singh. Legend has it that the parasol was knitted by the queen herself, while the Gods were constructing the temple. Vishwakarma, the architect of the Gods, was determined to complete the temple by sunset and had directed the villagers to maintain silence. However, in the final stages, a woman in the village started grinding grains on the stone, which infuriated the Gods and so, they cursed the village that no child will be born here ever.

Years later, the villagers claim that it continues to be the state of affairs. Mangilal Jagirdar, one of the village elders, said, "After the curse was pronounced, we tried to deliver one or two babies, but either the newborn was physically handicapped or mentally disabled, or worse, a stillborn." Jagirdar himself has eight sons, with his eldest son being the temple priest.

Meanwhile, villagers recalled that earlier, a small room had been constructed just outside the village to carry out deliveries, but now, the pregnant women are taken to Narsinghgarh, Bhopal or Kotra for their delivery.

The Block Development Officer as well as the Block Medical Officer confirmed that there have been no recents births in the village.
