Bhopal jailbreak: Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan suspends five officials, including DIG

ADG of the jail has been removed from his position.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan suspended Deputy Inspector General of Bhopal Central Jail after eight activists of the banned group Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) escaped late on Sunday night.

"We are suspending DIG Jail, and ADG Jail has already been removed," Chouhan said following a high-level meeting on the jailbreak. He also said that they were making all efforts to nab the SIMI terrorists. Four other jail officials were also suspended for lapses.

Security has been increased for the other prisoners.

State Home Minister Bhupendra Singh said that the jail administration's negligence responsible for the escape.

It is reported that the prisoners escaped at around 2 am using bed-sheets as rope. "The incident happened around 2 a.m. The terrorists used blankets and bed-sheets. They overpowered the two officers in charge and then opened the locks," Arvind Saxena, Superintendent of Police (SP) told ANI. "The inmates made a rope with the help of bed sheets to jump over the walls. We have launched combing operations," he added.

For their escape, the prisoners chose Diwali night, when people across the country celebrate by bursting crackers. An extensive search operation has been launched in Bhopal and other places.
