The Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta Police early on Saturday carried out a search at the house of deputy inspector general (Prisons) Umesh Kumar Gandhi and his Bhopal-based brother and claimed to have discovered assets worth crores, disproportionate to known sources of income.
Acting on a tip-off, Lokayukta sleuths raided Umesh Kumar Gandhi's house in the Old Jail premises, said superintendent of police Siddharth Choudhrary. So far, they had found fixed deposit receipts of Rs2.3 crore, Rs40 lakh investment in LIC, Rs4 lakh cash and title documents of 25 properties in Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Raisen, Katni and Sagar districts, Choudhary said, adding that the search was still on.
A search was also conducted at the residence of the DIG's brother, Ajay Gandhi from where officials had seized jewellery and cash worth crores of rupees. Documents related to three apartments in Bhopal, a plot of land, a seed farm and a poultry farm in Sagar district have also been found, sources said.
The 25-man team of the Lokayukta Police began the search after they received several complaints against DIG Gandhi for illegally amassing huge amount of wealth. However, Ajay Gandhi exuded confidence and denied any wrongdoings. "We have not done anything wrong and we will prove this. We do not posses any illegal wealth that cannot be proved," said Gandhi.
The raids come close on the heels of anti-corruption activists, including India Against Corruption activist Arvind Kejriwal, pressing for stricter rules to tackle corruption, which has found its way into the daily life of the countrymen, with bribes being paid for something as simple as getting a gas connection, passport or avoiding a traffic violation, to multi-billion-dollar scandals.
