Bhim Army chief Chandrasekhar alias Ravana, the main accused in the Saharanpur riots case, was arrested from Dalhousie in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday by a joint team of Himachal Pradesh, UP Police and the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF).

Among the 12 accused in the case, Chandrasekhar was on the run since the May 5 riots, which spread to many parts Saharanpur leaving about half a dozen dead. The district administration had put a reward of Rs 12,000 on him and issued non-bailable warrants (NBW) against him and the other accused.

Chadrasekhar was hiding in a local Dalit leader’s house. On the request of the UP Police, a team of STF was tracking his mobile phone. On getting his location, the joint team arrested him from Dalhousie.

Before his arrest, Chandrasekhar had given a tough time to STF sleuths by changing his SIM cards and locations frequently. “After tracing his calls, we zeroed in on two girls in Haridwar and his hometown Saharanapur,” claimed a STF officer.

His locations were tracked to Uttarakhand, Punjab and finally to Himachal Pradesh. A team of UP Police and STF camped in Himachal and sought help from the Himachal Police. The joint team swooped down on him when he made his last call to one of the girls giving his exact location. He was shocked to find commandos when he opened the door.

The 30-year-old Chandrasekhar had formed the Bhim Army Bharat Ekta Mission in July 2011. Its main aim is to fight for the rights of Dalits.

Chandrasekhar shot into limelight in 2016 when he put a signboard outside his village: “The Great Chaamar, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Village Gharkauli, Saharanpur”. This led to sectarian clashes in Saharanpur when caste Hindus objected to the signboard.
