As the first step in execution of the Kalpasar project, the state government has decided to construct a barrage on the Narmada river near Bhadbhut village in Bharuch district.

This barrage will divert Narmada water to the Kalpasar area, a move that will address the water requirement of Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemical Investment Regions (PCPIRs). Apart from this, around 4000 hectares of agriculture land will get water for irrigation.

Presently, the proposal of the Bhadbhut barrage project has been forwarded to the union ministry of forest and environment for environmental clearances.

"This will be the first irrigation project to be executed under Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. We have moved the applications for getting environmental clearances for the project. Once ready, the barrage will store 450 Million Cubic Meters of water, which is the capacity of Daman Ganga river. This project will provide Narmada water not only for lift irrigation in the Bharuch and Ankleshwar region but also to industries in PCPIR in Dahej, which are facing acute water crisis," said M S Patel, Secretary of Kalpasar Department.

Talking about PPP mode in the project, he said, "There will be six-lane road on the 10-km-long barrage, which will connect Hansot and Dahej. Nearly 20000 vehicles will pass from the barrage, as it will reduce the distance between Hansot and Dahej."

He added, "This would generate revenue of nearly Rs 480 crore per annum. The total cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs 2500 crore. We have chosen the location on the riverbed and not in the estuary so the water can be seen in the river at the religious spot, Shukla Tirth. The project has been envisaged for diverting the Narmada water through a canal to the Kalpasar area. The other benefit of the project is that it will also recharge the ground water in the region."
