After Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara's comment on alleged mass molestation in Bengaluru, it is the new chief of city police Praveen Sood who has made a contradictory statement.

Speaking to NDTV, Sood said that the mass molestation on MG Road stretch on New Year's Eve "did not happen". He later went on clarify that even if such a thing "could have happened," there was "no evidence" of it.

Calling the word "mass molestation" a "great disservice", he questioned why the incident was not reported by media on January 1.

Footages making rounds on social media show women crying and screaming for help, to which the police chief said that the footages that media is playing have been given to them by him itself. He also added that a 30 second footage can change the "whole context" because one does not know what happened before.

He also went to clarify that he did not mean to say that such an incident "did not happen", but "If something has happened, I said 3 days back, 'please come to us, we are ready to take action'," he said.

City police has been facing criticisms for incidents that took place in the IT capital of the country on New Year's Eve. Parameshwara too had responded by saying "these kinds of things do happen". To which he clarified on Thursday that he has been quoted "out of context".

According to a Bangalore Mirror report, women were allegedly molested on New Year's Eve at MG Road and Brigade Road, children were scared, and male friends and relatives had a tough time protecting them from unruly men. This was despite the city's "elaborate" security measures under which 1,500 policemen had been deployed in the area.
