At some point in our lives, we all have been addicted to certain TV show. What made us wait was the TV schedule. We would wait for a week or a day to watch the next episode. All that changed with streaming websites such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu and Hotstar to name a few.

These websites let you watch or binge-watch the entire series in one go. So you can watch the entire season of Game of Thrones in one sitting. People are now hooked to watching shows and they don’t have to wait for the next episode. While this might be good for the entertainment factor, but what if you are addicted to it?

One such case of extreme addiction has become India first case of Netflix addiction. Yes, a family in Bengaluru has admitted their 26-year-old son at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences for the deaddiction programme.

According to a report in The Hindu, the young man was unemployed. Every time he was enquired about job hunting, he would lock himself and watch Netflix. His friends’ success also triggered the addiction. The man has admitted that he spent seven hours daily watching Netflix.

The man is now undergoing a treatment at the Service for Healthy Use of Technology clinic located in Nimhans. The doctors treating him say that they are looking into the psychological issues as well as helping him in getting a job. The man, who has not been named, admitted that watching Netflix disconnected him from the reality and made him feel good.

Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma, who is treating the young man, has advice for the Generation Y hooked on Netflix or any other technology. “The best advice is to avoid the use of technology if it becomes a coping mechanism,” Dr Sharma was quoted as saying.
