TMC leader Anubrata Mondal organised a Brahmin Sammelan on Monday in the Birbhum district of the state. He is the district president of TMC.

At the Bolpur Dakbungalow Ground in Birbhum, about 15,000 Hindu priests had converged. They performed puja at the ground and later were felicitated with a Gita, a ‘namabali’ or religious shawl and a framed photograph of Swami Vivekananda, Ramkrishna Paramhansa and Saradha Ma.

Huge pictures of Lord Shiva was put up on the stage while guests wore badges which contained pictures of party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The initiative had been touted as an attempt by the TMC to appease Hindus ahead of the Panchayat polls this year. Mondal, however, negated such theories. “I used to do this every year at a block level but this year I had instruction from the party leadership to organise it at a district level,” he said. Asked about the proposed distribution of calves to the Brahmins, he said, “It will be done at a later date. Everyone will get a calf each.”

He denied that it was an attempt to counter BJP’s Hindutva agenda. “I don't need to learn Hindutva from them. I am a bigger Hindu than them. It is an event of Brahmins and that is why Lord Shiva’s picture has been put up,” he said and added, “During winter I carry out such sammelan or meetings. There is another sammelan of members of minority coming up. After that would be one with Schedule Tribe and Schedule Caste members along with some others. So it is not true that we are trying to counter BJP. For me, they have no foothold here and after 2019 they will be history.”

He referred to former TMC MP turned BJP leader Mukul Roy as ‘Jallad’ (executioner) and said, “He is a jallad who had tried to spoil our party. Now that we have thrown him out, he has joined another party.” Senior BJP leaders, however, said that the present dispensation was doing these because they were rattled by the growing popularity of the BJP in West Bengal.

“They would not have to do these if they had not worsened the situation here in Bengal. They have realised that members of the majority community are irked by the shameless minority appeasement and that is why they are resorting to these as damage control motive. Had they concentrated on development they would not have needed to appease members of any religion,” said BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha.
