The Bengal government has refuted the allegation.
In a letter written to the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) minister, the West Bengal state BJP has alleged that maps circulated recently during school examination in the state showed parts of Jammu and Kashmir as belonging to China.
State BJP general secretary Raju Banerjee in his letter has alleged that the maps given to students of Class X not only showed parts J&K incorrectly, it also excluded Arunachal Pradesh from India.
‘The map has been authorized by West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE), a board now run by members nominated by Government of West Bengal and works under Department of Education. The water mark of WBBSE is evidently present in the backdrop of this anti- national map. It is informed that this map has been supplied to the schools by Teachers Cell of Trinamool Congress’, the letter read.
The letter further alleges that ‘anti-national’ map was not a clerical error. ‘We feel this is a quite planned action to spread divisive idea against the integrity of the country. The young school students can be the best target to teach them wrongly(sic) about the map of the country. We, therefore appeal to you, to take up the issue with the Government of West Bengal’, the letter read.
State education minister Partha Chatterjee, however, refuted the allegations and said that BJP leaders were showing maps that had been tampered with. He showed a map of the WBBSE and said it did not have any such mistakes and added that other than the watermark, all WBBSE maps have a unique code.
“I have asked WBBSE to initiate a probe into it. They would get in touch with the schools concerned where the allegedly distorted maps are being circulated. The person alleging such changes will also be under the scanner of the investigation,” he said.
