The West Bengal BJP sent a legal notice to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew and party MP Abhishek Banerjee for his comments on the Tinsukia killings in Assam.

BJP leader Mukul Roy warned, if Abhishek does not tender an unconditional apology within seven days, a defamation suit will be filed against him. "Through his speech, Abhishek had tried to incite the people and spread violence. The Assam government has condemned the killings and investigation has been ordered. But speeches like these can worsen the situation that is already emotionally charged. For the records, about 70 BJP supporters who had been killed in Bengal during the panchayat election were also Bengalis," Roy said on Monday.

After five Bengalis were gunned down on November 1, a protest rally led by Abhishek was organised in Kolkata on November 2. At the end of the rally, while addressing the gathering, Abhishek had said that he believed that the BJP was behind the violence.

"The ULFA are being blamed. Now they denied their involvement. We demand a thorough investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court because we have seen that agencies such as the CBI and the ED themselves have corrupt people. I believe that the BJP is behind the killings. The Assam Chief Minister should immediately step down," Abhishek had said.

Referring to Abhishek's warning, that if Mamata gives a nod, there will be no chariots left in Bengal, Roy replied: "There are talks about attempts being made to stop BJP's 'rath yatra', but even if the TMC uses all its strength, it will not be able to do so."

The first of the three 'rath yatras' will begin on December 5 from Tarapith in Birbhum district. The second one will begin on December 7 from Cooch Behar and the third one from Gangasagar in South 24 Parganas district.

Party national president Amit Shah is expected to be present at all the three venues.
